Holbox and its surrounding islands are home to one of the most remarkable concentrations of bird species in all of Mexico, and the Isla Pajaros Bird Watching Tour gives you front-row access to this avian paradise. The tour centers on Isla Pajaros (Bird Island), a small protected island in the Yalahau Lagoon that serves as a critical nesting site for thousands of flamingos, pelicans, cormorants, frigate birds, roseate spoonbills, and dozens of other species. The island is part of the Yum Balam Flora and Fauna Protection Area, one of the most biologically diverse reserves in the Mexican Caribbean. The journey begins at Chiquila Port, where you board a specially designed low-impact boat that minimizes wake and noise disturbance to wildlife. The 20-minute ride across the Yalahau Lagoon is itself a birding opportunity, as brown pelicans, magnificent frigatebirds, and osprey are commonly spotted along the way. Your guide, an experienced naturalist with extensive knowledge of the region's avifauna, will begin the identification process immediately, pointing out species and explaining their behaviors. Upon approaching Isla Pajaros, the boat maintains a respectful distance from the island to avoid disturbing nesting birds.
