Whale Shark Snorkeling Tour from Holbox

Swimming alongside the world's largest fish is an experience that transforms the way you think about the ocean, and Holbox Island is one of the best places on Earth to do it. Every year from June through September, hundreds of whale sharks congregate in the warm, plankton-rich waters north of Holbox, creating one of the most spectacular marine wildlife gatherings anywhere. Our Whale Shark Snorkeling Tour takes you directly to these gentle giants for an intimate, unforgettable encounter.

The tour departs from Chiquila Port in the early morning, heading out by boat toward the feeding grounds located approximately 20-30 kilometers offshore. The boat ride itself is an adventure, crossing the crystal-clear waters of the Yalahau Lagoon before reaching the open Caribbean Sea. As you approach the whale shark congregation area, your experienced guide will spot the massive silhouettes just below the surface -- their polka-dotted backs gliding effortlessly through the water.

Snorkeling with whale sharks is conducted in pairs accompanied by a certified guide, following strict regulations established by SEMARNAT (Mexico's environmental agency) and CONANP (National Commission of Natural Protected Areas). These regulations limit the number of swimmers in the water at any time, ensure a safe distance from the animals, and prohibit the use of sunscreen that is not biodegradable. Our guides are trained marine biologists who can identify individual whale sharks and share fascinating facts about their behavior, migration patterns, and conservation status.

The waters around Holbox are part of the Yum Balam Flora and Fauna Protection Area, one of Mexico's most important biosphere reserves. By joining this tour, you are directly supporting conservation efforts that protect not only whale sharks but also the broader marine ecosystem including manta rays, sea turtles, dolphins, and hundreds of fish species. A portion of each ticket goes toward marine research and habitat preservation.

To prepare for your whale shark encounter, wear a swimsuit and bring a change of dry clothes. The boat can get splashy on the ride out. Bring biodegradable sunscreen only -- chemical sunscreens damage marine life and are prohibited in the whale shark zone. We provide snorkeling equipment including mask, snorkel, and life vest, but you are welcome to bring your own mask if you prefer a better fit.

Physical fitness requirements are moderate. You should be comfortable swimming in open water and able to keep pace with a slowly moving whale shark for short periods. Life vests are mandatory and provided. Children must be at least 6 years old and accompanied by an adult. The tour is not recommended for individuals with severe motion sickness, as ocean conditions can be choppy.

Photography tips: waterproof cameras and GoPros are perfect for this experience. Set your camera to burst mode to capture the best shots as whale sharks move past. Avoid using flash photography. The morning light provides the best visibility underwater. Our guides can point out the best angles and moments for photographs.
